How Can Befaco Rampage Be Used for Logic Functions, Comparators and Generative Patch Structures?
Advanced Generative Patching with Befaco Rampage: Comparators, Logic and Envelope Chaining
One reason Rampage is so highly regarded in generative modular synthesis is that it offers much more than envelope generation.
The central section of the module contains several powerful utility functions.
Comparator Functions
The output labelled B>A acts as a comparator.
Whenever the output level of section B exceeds the output level of section A, this output produces a high gate signal.
Because the levels of both sections constantly change, the comparator naturally generates pulses of varying lengths and timings.
This behaviour is extremely useful for creating evolving trigger patterns and modulation events.
MIN and MAX Outputs
Rampage also provides MIN and MAX outputs.
The MIN output always follows whichever section currently has the lower voltage.
The MAX output follows whichever section currently has the higher voltage.
When used with gate-like signals, these outputs effectively behave as logic processors:
MIN resembles an AND function.
- MAX resembles an OR function.
This allows Rampage to generate rhythmic and logical interactions without requiring dedicated logic modules.
End-of-Cycle Outputs
Each section provides an End Of Cycle (EOC) output.
These outputs can trigger other modules, trigger the opposite Rampage section, or create longer chains of modulation events.
One common technique is envelope chaining.
Instead of both sections running simultaneously, section A completes its cycle first and then triggers section B. This creates compound modulation shapes that are much more sophisticated than a single envelope.
Looping Modulation Systems
Rampage can also operate in loop mode.
In this configuration, a section continuously retriggers itself and behaves similarly to an LFO.
When both sections interact through their EOC outputs, highly complex modulation networks become possible.
These capabilities make Rampage an exceptionally powerful module for generative composition, where timing relationships, logic decisions and evolving modulation often play a central role.
