Befaco Rampage Explained: One of the Most Powerful Generative Modules in Modular Synthesis
Befaco's Rampage is one of the most versatile modules available for generative modular synthesis. Originally developed as a hardware module, it is also available in VCV Rack and has inspired similar designs in other modular environments.
Rather than being a simple envelope generator, Rampage combines several functions inside a single module. It can operate as:
A dual attack-decay envelope generator
A looping function generator
A slew limiter
A comparator
A logic processor
A trigger and gate source
- A complex modulation generator
This combination makes Rampage particularly valuable in generative patches, where a single module often performs several interconnected tasks simultaneously.
Internally, Rampage consists of two identical and independent sections. Each section can function on its own or interact with the other through the module's comparison and logic functions.
Both generators provide adjustable rise and fall times, selectable response curves, trigger inputs, CV control over timing, looping functionality and end-of-cycle outputs.
Because of this flexibility, Rampage can serve as a source of modulation, timing, rhythmic variation, logic decisions and control voltages within the same patch.
For many generative composers, Rampage becomes less a single module and more a complete modulation system capable of shaping the behaviour of an entire patch.
